What is Fallback / Failover?
Automatically routing requests to a backup LLM provider when the primary provider fails or is unavailable.
LLM providers experience outages, rate limits, and latency spikes. Failover ensures your application stays operational by automatically switching to backup providers. A typical failover chain might be: OpenAI → Anthropic → Google. The transition should be seamless to your users.
Examples
- → OpenAI times out → automatically retry with Claude
- → Hit OpenAI rate limit → switch to Azure OpenAI
- → Primary region down → fail over to secondary region
